The Greatest of All Time (also marketed as GOAT) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film^[7] directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by AGS Entertainment. The film stars Vijay in dual roles as a father and a digitally de-aged son, alongside Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Mohan, Ajmal Ameer, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Vaibhav, Yogi Babu, Premgi Amaren and Yugendran. It is the twenty-fifth production of the studio and the penultimate film of Vijay before his political entry. The film follows Gandhi, former leader of a special anti-terrorist squad, who reconciles with his squad members to address the problems which were stemmed from their previous actions.

The film was officially announced in May 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 68, as it is Vijay's 68th film as a leading actor, and the official title was announced that December. Principal photography commenced in October 2023 and wrapped by late-June 2024. Filming locations included Chennai, Thailand, Hyderabad, Sri Lanka, Pondicherry, Thiruvananthapuram, Russia and United States. The film has music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography handled by Siddhartha Nuni and editing by Venkat Raajen. Made on a budget of ₹400 crore, it is AGS' most expensive film.

The Greatest of All Time was released worldwide on 5 September 2024 in standard and IMAX formats to mixed reviews from critics, who praised the former half and climax while the predictability and writing in the post-interval portions received criticism.

Plot

2008: In Kenya, the Special Anti-Terrorism Squad (SATS), consisting of Gandhi, Sunil, Kalyan, and Ajay, intercepts their former chief, Rajiv Menon, who was on the run after being charged with treason. They retrieve stolen uranium from Menon and destroy the train he was on, believing everyone on board, including Menon, to have died. Back in Delhi, the team lives undercover as employees of India Tourism Development Corporation, a tourism company, hiding their real jobs from their families. Gandhi lives with his wife, Anusuya "Anu", who is pregnant, and their five-year-old son, Jeevan.

Gandhi takes his family along to alleviate Anu's suspicions of infidelity when he is assigned a new mission in Bangkok. After completing the mission, Gandhi and his family are attacked, leading to Anu going into labor, and Jeevan mysteriously disappearing. The police find a charred body they believe to be Jeevan’s, leaving Gandhi devastated. Anu delivers a baby girl but stops speaking to Gandhi out of grief.

Story:

Set against the backdrop of Pune, the film revolves around men from Parvathy Slum who are taken to a place called Dhandaka, from which they never return. Corrupt SI Vikramarka (Dev Gill) arrives at the scene and discovers that Asura (Pravin Tarde) is in control of the area. What does Vikramarka do next? Does he rescue the people or join forces with Asura? And how does Archana (Chitra Shukla) fit into the story? The film holds the answers.

 

Plus Points:

Dev Gill, known for his villainous roles, surprisingly shines as a hero in this film. His physique suits the hero’s role well, and his performance is praiseworthy. The mass action scenes involving him are compelling, and he handles the emotional scenes adequately.

Chitra Shukla, the female lead, pairs well with Dev Gill on screen. She performs her role satisfactorily. Pravin Tarde effectively portrays his villainous character, and Kalakeya Prabhakar, Tejaswini Pandit, and others deliver okay performances.

The film benefits from Ravi Basrur’s engaging score, which elevates several scenes and adds to the film’s appeal. The interval fight scene is a notable highlight.

 

Minus Points:

The film has several disappointing aspects. It starts decently for the first few minutes but follows a very routine narrative. The cliched hero-heroine entry scenes, a trivial love storyline, and the cruel villains terrorising people are familiar tropes we’ve seen before, such as in KGF.

The hero’s characterisation resembles characters from films like Temper and Pataas. The film feels like a mix of many mass movies, making it a boring and dull experience. After an acceptable first half, the second half tests the audience’s patience with numerous illogical scenes.

To portray the hero as a mass figure, unnecessary elements are added, reducing the naturality in the second half. Additionally, some plot twists are predictable, making the film less exciting. The climax is weak, and the songs are ineffective. The sentiment scenes in the pre-climax do not work well and seem overly dramatic.

 

Technical Aspects:

The film’s production values are noteworthy, and the action sequences are well-designed. However, the songs are inadequate. Ravi Basrur’s score stands out, adding a stylish touch to many scenes. The cinematography is decent, but many scenes needed trimming in the editing. Two songs in the second half should have been chopped off.

Director Peta Trikoti has delivered a below-average film. He chose a routine background but should have presented the narrative more innovatively. The film feels like a mix of many mass movies, with cliched villains and hero characterisation. While some mass scenes and action sequences are good, the overall execution is weak.

 

Verdict:

On the whole, Aho Vikramaarka is a disappointing drama. However, Dev Gill’s performance and screen presence are impressive, and the action scenes are well-suited for the mass audience. Nevertheless, the film lacks a solid story and narrative. The director’s routine plot and screenplay, combined with unconvincing emotions and a weak second half, make the film a forgettable experience

Vedaa unfolds like a modern Western, set against a stark and rugged backdrop reminiscent of classic frontier tales. The film introduces us to Major Abhimanyu Kanwar, portrayed by John Abraham, who steps into the life of Vedaa (Sharvari) with an almost mythic presence. Much like a mysterious stranger riding into town, Abhimanyu arrives to offer aid to the downtrodden, resonating with Western tropes of lone heroes coming to the rescue. However, this film’s narrative feels undermined by Abhimanyu’s serious saviour complex. His character, though well-intentioned, overshadows the true protagonist of the story.

The film centres on Vedaa, a young girl who has endured the horrors of honour killings firsthand, including the brutal murder of her brother by the village Pradhan, Jitendra Pratap Singh (Abhishek Banerjee). Singh’s cruelty extends to killing a girl from his family for eloping with a lower-caste boy. Despite her aspirations to become a boxer, Vedaa faces discouragement from her community. Recognizing her potential, Abhimanyu takes it upon himself to train her, an act that doesn’t sit well with the local male boxers. The director could have continued this story arc, with Vedaa becoming a national level boxer but he chooses to ignore the Million Dollar Baby route, concentrating on making a solid action film, replete with flying bullets, flying cars and a damsel in distress rescued by a white knight.

While John Abraham’s physical presence adds authenticity to his role, his portrayal of Abhimanyu feels incomplete. His entry into the story is subdued, mourning the loss of his wife (played by Tamannaah Bhatia) and seeking vengeance. Although Abhimanyu's support helps Vedaa gain confidence, the film’s climax betrays its foundational themes. The courtroom setting becomes the battleground where justice is sought, but Abhimanyu’s intervention—using a gavel as a weapon—turns the metaphorical into the literal, and the narrative’s tension dissipates. The resolution is particularly absurd. After all the build-up of Vedaa’s struggle and her quest for justice, it is an upper-caste man who ultimately handles the climactic confrontation, including killing the main villain inside the court. This not only diminishes Vedaa’s journey but renders the entire struggle for justice seemingly superfluous.
